Regina (reginar) I agree. Nightime reading is where I feel in love with my ereader.

message 102: by Stacia (the 2010 club) (last edited Aug 05, 2010 03:40PM) (new)

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) I also agree. It's easier to read with an ereader than it is to use a book, once you get used to it. Anything feels foreign the first few times you use it.

My fingers tend to cramp up when holding a book open. It's nice to get a cover for the ereader that will bend back. This provides a nice gripping surface. I can also lay on my side and prop the ereader on a pillow without having pages turn in or crinkle on me.

I prefer a dedicated ereader to something like an ipad/ipod, phone or laptop for two reasons.

1. No backlight, therefore no eyestrain if you want to read for hours (most ereaders have clip on lights available for reading in bed)

2. Easier to hold/flip buttons. Ereaders are designed for doing one thing - reading. Phones/ipods,laptops, etc. are designed for multiple functions. My Nook has a swipe feature as well, but I prefer pressing the flip page button with my thumb, so I don't have to move my hand at all to turn the page.

However, at some point I will own an ipad for the sole purpose of traveling. I'd love to have a device for not only books but also for other features (watching movies, other games, etc.).

That way I can have an ereader for dedicated home reading, and another device for on the go.

message 103: by Eve (new)

Eve Langlais (evelanglais) I've got a Sony reader, and I like it better than paper for reading in bed or anywhere for that matter. Creeping up on thirty seven, I find my eyes get tired at night even if I'm wide awake. The ability to enlarge print is awesome, as is the fact I never lose my page now because I've fallen asleep with the book on my chest. I don't have problems with the book trying to close on me as I lie on my side in bed trying to keep it open with one hand either. My only peeve, is it could use a light as it's hard to read unless you have a light on.

message 104: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) Eve you can get a clip on light -- that is what I use.

message 105: by T (new)

T | 9 comments I still enjoy my real books. Why? I'm from the old school of touching the paper and enjoying the thrill of it. But I do have an ereader and it is very convenient to carry 100s' of book in your pocketbook and not have the wonder what you will read next.

message 106: by Irene (new)

Irene Hollimon | 50 comments I use my Sony in the bed. I have a book cover with a book light built in. The bookcover was muy expensive but I'd say it's worth it.
I had 20/20 up close vision for most of my life and then bam!! the aging process got me. God's little present to me for my 40th birthday. One day, I just couldn't read the little print anymore. With the ereader, all my books are large print books- so cool.

Eve Langlais (evelanglais) Regina wrote: "Eve you can get a clip on light -- that is what I use."

I've seen them I think and they're surprisingly pricey. Will add it to my Santa list and let hubby get it for me instead of another small kitchen appliance. LOL

message 108: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Kumar (lisa_kumar) | 13 comments I had a nook but had to return it because of extremely loud, creaky page turn buttons--I've heard that is a sign that can lead to the bezel breaking around the buttons, plus my mom could even hear the sound over the phone! Otherwise, I really liked it and miss having an ereader.

I've ordered the Kindle 3 and will see how that goes.

Sally (sjanec) | 22 comments Rebecca wrote: "I do think I made a big mistake geting the Bebook Neo instead of a Kindle."
I know how you feel, I bought a jetbook lite and pretty much hated it, a month later turned around and bought a kindle, I don't know about any of the others but the kindle is just easier to use and read. I also have an Itouch which is ok for carring around but just to small to get that same as a book feel. Watch different sites like craiglist/ebay, I know quite a few people who like the best and now that there is a new kindle will be dumping their old one for the latest

message 110: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) I just looked up the Bebook Neo and it looks nice! I don't think you made a mistake, unless you are wanting books that Amazon has which you can't buy?

Wicked ♥ (Wickedly Bookish Reviews) aka Bat-Jess | 62 comments My hubby just surprised me with a Nook. Seeing as we agreed to get it on my bday, which is in November, I was super surprised when he gave it to me. I really love it. It makes reading so much easier for me; my eyes are terrible and the extra extra large font is just the thing. I'm so happy and would reccommend this reader to anyone not sure what reader to buy. Really though, i'm sure they are all wonderful.

I've ordered it. I had the nook, but the page turn buttons were so loud and creaky, I had to return it.

message 114: by Xin (new)

Xin Li | 24 comments I ordered the Kindle 3 already. Can't wait. Literally. Unfortunately, I'm hopping on a plane to singapore in a week, and I won't have my Kindle with me :( Sadness. I'l have to stick to reading on my Nexus One phone.

message 115: by Irene (new)

Irene Hollimon | 50 comments I love that the new readers have next page buttons on both sides. My reader just has one set of buttons on the bottom. I got engrossed in a book and I couldn't stop reading it... My left thumb ached when I was done. If I keep this up, I'm going to have a normal dainty girl right thumb and a muscle bulging arnold schwartzeneger left thumb. : )

message 116: by [deleted user] (new)

Thanks to everyone who answered my question about reading in bed with and ereader. You have convinced me to check into an ereader and see how I like it! Now I just need to decide which one!!:)

Stacia (the 2010 club) (stacia_r) I think that Sony (Best Buy I think?), Nook (Barnes and Noble) and Kindle (Target I think) can all be taken for a test drive at various stores. I've never seen a Kobo, but afaik, those are at Borders. I'm not sure if K2 is still being displayed right now or if Target has switched to a K3 demo. Someone else might know this one.

Anyone that has different info is more than welcome to correct me. I was only posting what I think is current.

Last week the Kindle was still at Target, at least in the IL suburbs. I can't say if they're carrying them at other Targets now.

I've just been looking at the kindle book prices in the UK (we wondered above if they would be higher than the US ones!)

My first random example is a book to be released on 28th September:

Venom An Elemental Assassin Book by Jennifer Estep Venom: An Elemental Assassin Book by Jennifer Estep

The pre-oder price at Amazon UK's kindle store is £4.73. That converts to $7.55

The pre-order pice at Amazon.com's kindle store is $7.35

Difference $0.20 - £0.12

A random already published book:
Black Dust Mambo (Hoodoo, #1) by Adrian Phoenix Black Dust Mambo by Adrian Phoenix

The current price at Amazon UK's kindle store is £4.17. That converts to $6.66

The current price at Amazon.com's kindle store is $6.48

Difference $0.18 - that's £0.11!!

Not as much difference as I'd expected!!! And very encouraging for us Brits!! Lets hope this is common to all kindle books!

Regina (reginar) That is great!

message 122: by Literary Ames (new)

Literary Ames (amyorames) | 276 comments Jen, I noticed that in pricing too but I emailed Amazon and they told me you can only have your account with either .com or .co.uk. Until availability gets a lot better i.e. a similar number of books are available on both sites, I'm sticking with my .com account.

Andi | 74 comments :D :D :D Very excited! Just ordered my Kindle 3G from Amazon. Amazon have temporarily sold out, but I've placed the order for when they get more stock. I probably won't receive it until 17 Sept :( but excited nevertheless! :D

message 124: by Literary Ames (last edited Sep 06, 2010 03:59PM) (new)

Literary Ames (amyorames) | 276 comments Has anyone seen the new Sony ereaders? Both are touchscreens now and you can turn the page with a swipe of the finger. The only differences I can see

PRS-350 has limited storage (the same as the new Kindle, I think) and is £160 (from Waterstones)
http://www.sony.co.uk/product/rd-read...

PRS-650 has a memory stick and SD card slots and is £200 (from Waterstones)
http://www.sony.co.uk/product/rd-read...

They're also still selling the PRS-300 for £100 now.

I still haven't bought the K3 and I'm not sure what to do now because I have epubs with DRM and wouldn't be able to read them on a Kindle.

message 125: by Irene (new)

Irene Hollimon | 50 comments go for a Sony. It reads epubs.

message 126: by GinBee, Founder & Mod (new)

GinBee (jennymbee) | 4468 comments Mod
Amy, I've got a Sony PRS-300 - well worth the £100 in my opinion :) If you already have epubs with DRM I'd say go Sony. But I don't think sony can read any Kindle files (for instance they gave away Darkfever free recently) think you'd need Kindle for PC/ipod etc to read those still.

Having said that I'd be very tempted to buy the new Kindle if I didn't already have my Sony.

One more thought, with the Sony all the books are stored on your computer (and transfered to the reader as you want) but the Kindle content is on your Kindle account not computer. Not sure if that's a positive or a negative, I guess it depends!!

Keep us updated on what you decide!

message 127: by GinBee, Founder & Mod (new)

GinBee (jennymbee) | 4468 comments Mod
Just had a look at your links Ames, I see why the PRS-300 is on sale everywhere, it's being replaced!! The PRS-350 is new!

The PRS-350 is touch screen but the PRS-300 is button operated if that influences you.

message 128: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) You can back up your Kindle content on the computer if you want, it is just that you don't have to. it is a hard decision, but let us know what you decide! I took over 6 months to make my choice and that was before the choices got tougher! I am very tempted to get a Sony 300, but going to wait a few months - prices will likely drop again. And maybe there is a new Nook in the works.

Thanks Regina for the Kindle advice! I wondered if you were able to back it up.

The Sony 300 looks like it is the old model, if you go to the Sony site it's the 350 that's listed as the pocket edition now, guess the 300 is being sold off!

message 130: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) Yes, I am wondering if it is worth it to snag an older version, or wait for the newer one to drop in price? I will likely hold off deciding.

Yup you can back up! Also, if you buy books from places besides Amazon (which I do), you will likely need to back up, b/c most other vendors do not archive.

message 131: by Literary Ames (new)

Literary Ames (amyorames) | 276 comments If only there was a device that could read Kindle format and epubs with DRM, or even an Adobe Digital Editions app for phones.

I have the Kindle for Android app so swiping my finger across the screen to turn a page is second nature to me now so the PRS-350 is looking good. However, I don't see myself buying from Waterstones or anyone else but Amazon (except maybe the occasional book from Kobo) so I'd just be reading my freebies on it. I think it's a bit too expensive at the moment to just do that. If I had the money I'd buy the Kindle and the 350.

message 132: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) You know I go back and forth between swiping my finger to turn pages on my iPhone and pushing the button on my Kindle -- it is easy to go back and forth.

That'd be the iPad. That is, if one doesn't mind dropping 500-850 bucks....not to mention the inevitable eye-strain. ^_^

Yer right, though. These ereader folks need to get with the program and be open to other's formats. But I guess that's not gonna help any company's bottom-line...just the consumers. Hmph.

Just have to mention that most of the big eretailers allow you to re-download previously purchased books from your online account (Sony, Kobo, BooksonBoard, ebooks.com, Fictionwise, Diesel). Nothing as direct or fancy as Kindle's direct-download system, of course. But nonetheless, should you require it (replacement device), you have backup.

GinBee (jennymbee) | 4468 comments Mod
Just musing to myself, but I'm guessing that eventually there will be a break through device which reads ALL formats (most significantly Kindle and epubs!!) and can get books from anywhere! I think that is when ereaders and ebooks will really take off.

message 138: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) I personally delete books I have read off of my ereader -- unless they are ones that I reread certain parts often. But redownloading is so quick and easy, that I don't worry about it. But it is nice to know those places allow to re-download. I have bouth from Booksonboard and Fictionwise for my Kindle.

message 139: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) I agree Jen. But according to Amazon, its ebook sales in the first quarter of this year (I think I got that right?) outpaced and was higher than there non-new release book sales. So we may be getting there already. I am guessing it has to do with paying for rights -- I would guess that if Sony or B&N paid rights to Amazon, they could allow Amazon's proprietary format to be viewable on their devices. I do know that Amazon doesn't pay rights for the ePub and ADE to be viewable -- which Kobo, B&N and Sony all pay rights for. My understanding could be wrong though.

I also think the publishers need to get real and allow vendors to sell ebooks for less (perhaps not new releases). We can't re-sell ebooks and the usage is limited compared to a real book. Plus the cost is obviously less.

I just don't see it happening for awhile, but I hope I am wrong.

message 140: by GinBee, Founder & Mod (new)

GinBee (jennymbee) | 4468 comments Mod
I think your right Regina, but it would be nice if we could just pick the device of our choice and buy from anywhere! Maybe one day......

message 141: by Sally (new)

Sally (sjanec) | 22 comments I have a kindle and love it. The plus side is the fact that you don't have to keep all of them on the kindle, you can load and unload them from their site or download them on to a disk or computer so you have them if something happens to Amazon (unlikely). I don't know about others but you can share an account with someone else and pass the books back and forth. I have a fictionwise account also, but don't like to buy the DRM books because they are not compatable with kindle, but they have many in multiformat that can be sent to the kindle. Before I knew much about ereaders I bought a jetlite from fictionwise, what a pain, you can download the DRM books but you have to put in your full name and Credit card number that you used to buy the book with, because they only have a 0-9 keypad it takes me about 70 keystrokes to get it unlocked, hopeing that i didn't mess up and use a wrong keystroke along the way. So I definately reccommend using one that don't require a password, I know that the Kindle doesn't but don't know about the others

message 142: by Literary Ames (new)

Literary Ames (amyorames) | 276 comments OK, I've noticed Amazon UK have more books available now, not quite as many as the .com site but it's better. However, I'm really mad that the ever-changing freebies that only became available to those in the UK a few weeks ago are now no longer accessible! *sob*

For example, Marked is supposed to one of the freebies at the moment but check the US site and it's $6.09 and £3.95 at the UK store. Why are they being so mean to us? These are the only non-domain ebooks that are free to us UK peeps -boring!

message 143: by Andi (new)

Andi | 74 comments Still waiting for my new Kindle 3G. Dispatch date has now been put back to Sept 25 :( I was hoping to have it by now. I guess if the new Kindle is so popular, Amazon will continue to increase the number of books available as kindle version.

Reason I ask is my boss got one and due to problems he returned it, same with the second one and he is now waiting for his third, seams to be a lot of feed back saying the same. I would love to have a look at it but his experiance is putting me off a little.

Abby | 2 comments I love my eReader. I am lookin gat the the New Cruz Tablet that is coming out in Oct., though. Has anyone heard anything about it. It is suppose to be like the iPad?

message 147: by Pam (new)

Pam | 1 comments I've been considering upgrading to a new e-reader and looking at all my options. First, I do believe the prices are all coming down so I may wait it out till December and see what happens there. I have a Sony pocket, I loved it to pieces, but I'm now spoiled and enjoy the ability to one touch buy (which can be dangerous I know, lol). I no longer want to be limited to buy at home only and then have to download the books on to the reader. I have kindle and nook applications on my Android phone and I've come to love the convience of browsing and getting instant gratification! So far I had been leaning toward the Nook, it has all the features I want but I can put my already extensive library on it with my computer. However the Cruz reader, or tablet both look like an even better option. My only problem with the Cruz is battery life doesn't seem long enough for a heavy reader like me, 10 hours is way too short imo. So, still going to hold off and continue to explore my options. Anyone here have the Kobo? Can you tell me if you like it, pro's, con's. Also, anyone with the kindle, or Nook let us know what you like/ dislike on your reader.
Thanks =)

message 148: by AH (new)

AH Kobo is simple. It is an ereader with eink technology, so you can read in the sun but you need a light for the dark. I got it as soon as it was released, so it was a little buggy at first. The Kobo software did not load on my PC or others in our home, but no problem, I can load books on through Adobe digital editions. Kobo can read PDFs, but navigation is a pain, so I convert PDFs to epubs whenever I can. I am very happy with the Kobo. I bought it to be an ereader. I did not care for other features such as 3G (expensive in Canada) and keyboards, dictionaries, etc. I like how I can purchase books from anywhere, I am not tied down to one store. Kobo is also pretty cheap - it goes on sale for $128CAD and I feel that with Kindle's lower prices, most ereaders will lower their prices. Battery life is good, depending on the type size (number of page forwards you hit), it usually lasts 10-12 hours and I haven't seen it drain out when not in use. Hope this helps.

I have a Kobo too and the only problem i've had with it is that the page forward button is starting to sink in already, which is makes it harder to turn the page. Its getting to be rather annoying, but when I looked up the limited warranty, this was not covered under it.
