So the first thing is that I have a background and personality that doesn't do well with vulnerability. The second thing is that there's always a component of writing that feels like therapy to me. That means that I can work out some of my issues and be a bit more open when I write than in my personal life. At the same time, I feel myself pulling back when my writing approaches certain topics. I work on an equilibrium to function as a happy, healthy adult, and I can't tilt the balance by uncovering old wounds. Sometimes I feel that my writing would be so much stronger and honest if I were brave enough to confront those topics, but I can't afford a 'disturbance in the force' if you will. ;-)(less)

Have you ever worried that your work isn't "literary" or "smart" enough? and/or "Marketable" or "accessible" enough? Are these necessary concerns? Or do you find them stifling? When concepts like these start closing in, do you work *around* or *through* them?

These are all valid worries and I definitely feel the push-pull between 'literary/smart' on one end and 'marketable/accessible' on the other. The answer we all want to hear (and say) is 'Write what you want! Worry about reaching readers later.' But the truth is that -- and especially true for independent authors who have to hustle to get noticed -- is that no one will get to read all your great work (and decide for themselves if they like it) if they don't know it exists. As an indie author, I always have to have marketability on my mind. But not so much that I end up writing something that I myself wouldn't enjoy reading. That's always how I calibrate: am I writing something I myself would enjoy? If I start veering away from that towards what I hear a certain target market wants, then I know it's time to start steering back. (less)

Two books and a meditative Valentine’s Day

As I I write this it’s Valentine’s Day in the Philippines, an occasion that I have mixed feelings about. Commercialized and corny; the bane of my traffic-screwed pre-pandemic life; nowhere to eat or to go because everywhere is full and the flowers are 10x more expensive.

And yet: last year, I stopped by the cemetery with a single gerbera to place on the columbarium where my husband’s ashes rested.
