Herman Koch
“When we were still living at home, all he ever drank was cola, huge amounts of it; he had no problem knocking back an entire king-size bottle at dinnertime. Then he would produce these gigantic belches, for which he was sometimes sent to his room, belches that lasted ten years or longer--like subterranean thunder rolling up and exploding from somewhere deep down in his stomach--and for which he enjoyed a certain schoolyard fame: among the boys, that is, for he knew even then that girls were only repulsed by burps and farts.”
Herman Koch, The Dinner

Kurt Vonnegut Jr.
“Why throw money at problems? That is what money is for.
Should the nation's wealth be redistributed? It has been and continues to be redistributed to a few people in a manner strikingly unhelpful.”
Kurt Vonnegut, Timequake

“Mendel hated motorists. Give a man a car of his own and he leaves humility and common sense behind him in the garage.”
John le Carré, Call for the Dead

Jenny Nordberg
“When one gender is so unwanted, so despised, and so suppressed in a place where daughters are expressly unwanted, perhaps both the body and the mind of a growing human can be expected to revolt against becoming a woman. And thus, perhaps, alter someone for good.”
Jenny Nordberg, The Underground Girls of Kabul: In Search of a Hidden Resistance in Afghanistan

Raymond Carver
“There was a time when I thought I loved my first wife more than life itself. But now I hate her guts. I do. How do you explain that? What happened to that love? What happened to it, is what I'd like to know. I wish someone could tell me.”
Raymond Carver, What We Talk About When We Talk About Love
