| I was skeptical about this one, but it exceeded all expectations. Laugh out loud funny at times. | |

"This novel follows a Vietnamese family that flees to the United States in 1979 over the next 26 years. I was captivated. The writing is absolutely gorgeous. The structure is such that we never get to spend enough time with Huong, Tuan, and Binh/Ben. "

| I really appreciate the ideas/insights, but the execution was just too influencery for my taste. I would have enjoyed it more as a memoir—or, on the opposite end of the spectrum, with a more academic approach. Still recommend though. | |
