I always have several projects going on at once, so if I hit a dead end with one, I just change gears. A lot of times, that means changing genres, which helps me a lot.

Also, I remind myself that it's just a draft. Usually "writer's block" is just me being a perfectionist. I know what I want to say, I just don't know how best to say it yet.

The bottom line is that I don't stop writing. You have to keep the momentum going.(less)

I’ve learned a lot from being in an MFA program, but you don’t need a degree in writing in order to write well. You just need to read. A lot. Cancel your cable service and use that money to buy books. Then use the time you would have spent watching TV to actually read them. Read for pleasure, but if you like what you’re reading, slow down and think about what makes it work.(less)

I was intrigued by the form and appreciate the meta-commentary from an intellectual point of view. But I didn’t care about the characters or plot and wasn’t particularly impressed with the conceit’s execution.

As a standalone story, it might be 3 stars with how deliberately confusing the Iron Tangle is, but as a prelude to the rest of the series, I’m still here for it. It’s giving Hunger Games even stronger now. Looking forward to Book 4–let’s go!

A well-written enough mystery, just not especially compelling

I really liked it at first. My interest started to wane with the repetitiveness of the musings, but the conclusion was ultimately very satisfying. We read this for a high school book club, and it was the first book everyone liked.

3.5 stars

Technically well-written enough but largely an exercise in unreliable narrator. The ending neatly sorts up a complex web of conflicting accounts, but the premise was far-fetched, the characters were unlikable, and the stakes didn't feel real

"⭐️ 2.5 stars. It’s not you, Julie. It’s me. (Actually no, it’s kind of both of us.)

I was so excited for this one. But I did not like it. I am in the minority here, it's gotten great reviews. Leading me to believe this is a ✨me✨ problem.
