5 stars when I first read this in 2009 4.5 stars for the 2026 reread—as funny, informative, and interesting as before, but a few moments made me wish Bryson would revise this book with a more contemporary perspective (plus a new chapter!) |

| Very difficult to get into with multiple perspectives & lack of a coherent timeline. But once I got about halfway through, it started to become clear how the pieces all fit together, & I couldn’t put it down. Very disturbing but has something to say. | |
