I always have several projects going on at once, so if I hit a dead end with one, I just change gears. A lot of times, that means changing genres, which helps me a lot.

Also, I remind myself that it's just a draft. Usually "writer's block" is just me being a perfectionist. I know what I want to say, I just don't know how best to say it yet.

The bottom line is that I don't stop writing. You have to keep the momentum going.(less)

I’ve learned a lot from being in an MFA program, but you don’t need a degree in writing in order to write well. You just need to read. A lot. Cancel your cable service and use that money to buy books. Then use the time you would have spent watching TV to actually read them. Read for pleasure, but if you like what you’re reading, slow down and think about what makes it work.(less)

Things We Lost to the Water by Eric Nguyen
"This novel follows a Vietnamese family that flees to the United States in 1979 over the next 26 years. I was captivated. The writing is absolutely gorgeous. The structure is such that we never get to spend enough time with Huong, Tuan, and Binh/Ben. " Read more of this review »

I really appreciate the ideas/insights, but the execution was just too influencery for my taste. I would have enjoyed it more as a memoir—or, on the opposite end of the spectrum, with a more academic approach. Still recommend though.
