After years of the grind, I have happily stepped off the treadmill. I am unencumbered and free to disappear into the worlds I love most.
I am a lifelong devotee of cyberpunk, hard science fiction, and crime fiction. My Kindle is my constant companion. When a book truly grabs me, I will reread it until the pages feel like home, whether they are digital or otherwise. Years ago, a brilliant communications professor introduced me to a deliciously rebellious writing exercise. The exercise is rewriting the endings of my favorite novels. I do it not out of disrespect but out of pure joy. I add a new twist or a darker fall or a redemptive dawn, whatever the story demands in that moment.
Some call it sacrilege. I call it play. I secretly live for the day an author spots one of my alternate endings and replies that they actually considered that path but here is why they went the other way.
So tell me, fellow neon-drenched dreamers and shadow-loving readers. Are there other die-hard fans out there who get a thrill from remixing canon? Are there fans who treat published endings as merely excellent first drafts?
If you are game, let us start an experiment. I will nominate five seminal books from cyberpunk, sci-fi, and crime fiction. Then I will take the first one and write a new ending and toss it into the ring. It will be your turn next.
Who is in? Let us misbehave with footnotes and full credit to the originals of course.
