This is a really intense, sadly realistic YA novel that was written extraordinarily well, about a teenage girl who struggles to find herself after her horrible sister dies. Half the book takes place when she is by herself, and half of it is in the form of flashbacks to her life with a rotten family who did not deserve her. she said: " This is a beautifully written YA book about the destruction brought by drugs and the abuse and self-abuse that accompanies it. It is about the relationship between an overwhelmed teacher in a rotten high school and the girl who only comes in to attend her class so that she can write about her nightmarish existence, and how that relationship grows into something wonderful. Despite the pain, the ending is terrific AND realistic. Be prepared for a few ugly cries. "
