Well, someone's got to recommend Shogun! It's a great historical fiction about feudal Japan circa the 1600s, loosely based on historical facts. It's really well written and is a page-turner once you get past page 80 or so. It starts a bit slowly with a bunch of mainly Dutch sailors plus an Englishman who crash-land on the shores of Japan and are not exactly welcome. Then it gets interesting when the Englishman begins to live among the Japanese and we see the local perspective on life. Beautifull

This isn't necessarily my favorite historical fiction novel but I really like it. This book demonstrates that even thousands of years later human beings and their society haven't changed that much. Religious hatred/fanaticism and class divides among other issues have been ever present. That's a message I can really get behind.
