I am an eclectic reader to be sure. I usually read around 200 books per year, not counting graphic novels or children's books. I try to read books of all kinds, fiction and nonfiction, most genres.
Like many voracious readers, I am also a writer, having published several short stories in various anthologies. In addition, I've written a sci-fi/fantasy/historical mystery combo involving time travel and am presently working on a historical mystery set in 1870's Colorado.
I used to review just about every book I read, but I have recently decided to cut way back. As much as I enjoy writing them, a good review takes a lot of time to write. I've made it to a point in life (OK...age) that I need to direct my time towards my own writing. Now, I limit my reviewing efforts to indie authors (for whom reviews are extremely important) and for a few books for which I have an urgent need to say my piece.
I tend to accumulate books much faster than I can read them. Right now my database tells me I have 2934 books on my TBR shelves. (Two full rooms of wall-to-wall, floor-to-ceiling shelves). At least I am never without reading choices...
I like holding a "real" book in my hands but have become well-adjusted to the conveniences of e-books as well. I've also enjoyed quite a few audio books, especially from my days of long work commutes. That brings a whole new experience to my addiction. Some people don't count listening to an audio book as "reading" but I choose to embrace the centuries-old oral tradition of spoken story-telling.
As for my ratings philosophy, I pretty much stick to the Goodreads system. That means a 3-star rating isn't "bad" by any means. I don't give many 1-star reviews and try to save my 5-star reviews for the cream of the crop so as not to cheapen the prize.
Enough rambling...if you've made it this far, feel free to drop me a line through Goodreads. But right now I need to get back to that book I was reading...
