“Do you know how long I’ve waited for you to look at me this way?”
She assumed he was teasing her. “What are you talking about? You didn’t even like me for most of the time we’ve known each other.”
He bent his head before turning to go, his voice low and confident in her ear. “Or maybe I’m just that good of an undercover agent.”

“When do you leave?” she asked.
His fingers paused. “Labor Day weekend.”
So soon. Only two and a half weeks away. She nodded, going for a joke. “Good. That’s about when I was planning on getting sick of you, anyway.”
“Pfft. I’m already counting down the minutes until I can make my escape from this room.”
“It’s your room.”

“I was thinning the hellebore when I saw a woman in an oversize suit jacket and a fedora trying to throw a rope into a window two stories high to rescue her friend in the dark and rain. I've traveled all over the world and I've seen many things, but I've never seen anything like that. And then the alarm went off and she didn't run. She didn't give up. She refused to leave her friend and tried to scale a sheer brick wall with her bare hands. I didn't know love and loyalty like that existed. I only knew what it meant to be alone. I had to meet her."
"We didn't meet," I said. "You grabbed me and dragged me into the bushes."
"That's what you do when you find the love of your life," he said.
"You love me?"
His voice was soft as he turned away. "I think I loved you from the moment you threw that rope.”

“His kiss was soft and gentle at first, but quickly turned urgent and demanding, as if he had been waiting for this moment all afternoon.
Unable to resist, I wrapped my arms around his neck and deepened the kiss, our tongues tangling, stroking, tasting each other. Jack's hands moved down my back to my hips, pulling me closer to him. I could feel his hardness pressing against my thigh and a moan escaped my lips.
He pulled back for a moment, his eyes raking over my body, as if memorizing every curve. "So beautiful," he murmured, his hands gripping my hips tighter.”

“Watch your back."
"I thought that was your job." I looked over my shoulder, only to catch Jack's gaze on my ass.
"It's more of a hobby right now," he said.”

“20 percent and that's my final offer." Dog folded his arms across his chest in a move that I assumed was meant to intimidate. He had sizable muscle, but the effect was watered down by his My Little Pony tattoos. I could swear I saw Fluttershy wink.
"Don't give me that 20 percent bullshit," I said. "I work in retail. I know the margins and I know you didn't buy these goods so everything is profit for you."
"You didn't tell me she was a hard-ass." Dog glared at Jack.
"I like to keep the good stuff to myself."
"Give me the Boxing Day special," I said. "Six A.M. door crasher."
His eyes widened. "40 percent?"
I shook my head. "First five people in the door."
"Sixty?"
"Take it or leave it." I pulled out a wad of cash. We'd all chipped in to cover the costs in hopeful anticipation of a bigger return at the end.
Dog took the money, but not before registering a complaint with customer service.
"You said she was a newb," he said to Jack.
"She's a smart and savvy newb." Jack grinned. "Gotta say, it's pretty damn hot.”

“Are you a part of an off-the-books organization that steals necklaces and seduces candy store clerks?"
"Were you seduced?" He pulled on his helmet and buckled the strap beneath his chin.
"I will be once I feel the thrum of the motor between my thighs." I put on the helmet and his voice faded to a dull muffle.
"I thought that had already happened."
"Are you cracking jokes at such a serious moment?" I asked. "This is my first time."
"I promise to be gentle.”

“You are so fucking sexy when you're bossing people around," Jack said, nuzzling my neck as he pulled me behind an azalea bush. "Have you ever done it outdoors?"
"Didn't last night count?" We'd sneaked up to the roof of Jack's hotel for a little loving beneath the stars.
"There were no trees or bushes, no flowers or grass. I want you naked in the hellebore moaning my name." He pulled me into his chest, squeezing me so hard, my breath came out in a huff.
"Jack, you know how much I love sexy times with you. But I've got a minister to ordain, a wedding to run, a heist to plan, a necklace to steal, and a bride to kidnap. I can't juggle any more balls.”

“She pulls off the mask and her beautiful face warms you inside. Too bad she's frowning. "You have hypothermia," she says. "I'll get some blankets to warm you."
"Best cure for hypothermia is skin-to-skin contact." Your words come stronger now because Simi is here, and she's real and her tears are deliciously hot and they remind you of other places that can be hot and hopefully she'll take you to bed so you can hold her and make the cold go away. "I think you should take off our clothes and lie on top of me.”

“And there's that big ego again, filling the room."
"That's not the only big thing in this room, sweetheart." He slid his hand around my nape and pulled me in for a long, deep kiss.
I stiffened and instinctively pulled away, but Jack tightened his hold. "She's watching," he mumbled against my lips. "We need to sell the story."
To be honest, I didn't want to fight it. I'd missed Jack. I wanted him. I wanted this to be real. No matter how hard I tried, I couldn't keep myself from melting into him and drowning in that kiss.
"That's my girl." His lips swept down my neck, his hand curving under my ass. Before I knew what was happening, he'd lifted me to his lap.
"Put me down." I shot a frantic gaze in the direction of the nosy receptionist, who didn't seem to have anything else to do but watch us. "I'm not a child."
"But you are good at hiding things." He gave a pointed glance down at his lap. "Although if you don't sit still, you're going to make the problem worse, not better."
I could feel the problem hard against my thigh, so I did what any irritated fake newlywed would do: I wiggled.”

“Jack slid his hand between my thighs, fingers stroking where once dry panties used to be.
"This doesn't change anything." I sucked in a sharp breath when his fingers breached the cotton barrier. "I'm still angry with you."
Jack froze, his fingers only inches from where I wanted them to go. "Are you sure you're good with this?"
"Yes, so long as you understand that it doesn't mean anything. After this, things go back to how they were."
Twenty minutes later, disheveled and breathless, we held each other in the shadows.
"Jack?"
"Yes, sweetheart?"
"You can have your greenhouse.”

“You don't belong in Jack's world, and he doesn't belong in yours. My advice is to get out while you can."
I glared at him with a mixture of disbelief and annoyance. "You think you know everything about me, but I'm not a nice girl. I've done bad things. I've been arrested, handcuffed, and interrogated in the police station as an accessory to crime. I've broken laws. I've been threatened, kidnapped, tied up, and was an active participant in a high-speed car chase. I know who Jack is. I have a good idea about what he does. And I can make my own decision about whether we're good together or not, which, by the way, we are, subject to smoothing out a few wrinkles."
George chuckled. "So, you're saying that what you see isn't what you get. You're no lightweight."
"Damn right.”

“I sucked in my lips and leaned against the camper door. "Which one is the real you? The charming rogue slash professional thief or the highly trained secret undercover agent?"
Jack walked over and leaned his forearm against the door above my head, his gaze never leaving mine. "Which one do you want?"
My pulse kicked up a notch and a white-hot heat shot through my veins. "I want the real you."
Jack cupped my jaw, tilting my face back as his lips came down on mine. "You have the real me."
I melted against him, drowning in his kiss. I wanted to go back to the time when there was trust between us and life hadn't gotten in the way.
He lifted my hand and brushed his lips softly over my knuckles. "I never saw a more beautiful sight than you hanging out the window of a speeding truck, screaming my name."
"You didn't answer."
Slowly, carefully, he kissed my hand, claiming every inch of bare skin with a gentleness I didn't know he possessed. "I had a knife between my teeth."
"I suppose that's a good excuse." I tipped my head back for another kiss. Alone for the first time since the chase, knowing he was safe, I felt overwhelmed with the need to have him close, to feel his body against mine. His smell, his taste, his heat, his desire--- I wanted them all.
His lips met mine and I explored the depths of his mouth, tangling my tongue with his as I slid one hand under his shirt to feel his warmth and the firm, steady beat of his heart beneath my palm. When we broke apart to take a breath, I pressed a kiss to his throat, licking the saltiness from his skin.
He backed away, one step, then two, leaving me bereft.
"What's wrong?"
"Chloe is in the truck."
"She's a very heavy sleeper." I trailed my fingers over every hard ripple of his abdomen, following the soft trail that disappeared beneath his belt.”

“You understand the secret part of me that craves adventure. You push me to be better. You have faith in me. When you listen, you really listen. When you look at me, you really see me."
"I'm the best." He gave a satisfied growl and unbuttoned the rest of my shirt.
"Very best," I agreed as he lifted me and propped me on the desk, facing the chair with my skirt bunched around my waist.
"You love me."
"I do."
He sat in the chair facing me and slowly slid my panties over my hips.
"What are you doing?" I could barely hear my own words for the pounding of my pulse in my ears as he eased me back on the desk.
"We're going to play show-and-tell." His hands found my thighs and he spread me wide.”
