    “Penises!

    Sweet Jesus.

    Penises everywhere.

Horror slams into me as I register what I'm seeing. Oh God. I've stumbled onto a penis convention. Big penises and small penises and fat penises and penis-shaped penises. It doesn't matter which direction I move my head because everywhere I look I see penises.”
    Elle Kennedy, The Deal

“I’m not going to say it was love at first sight. No, it was more like oh, hell-yes-please, I’ll have that. With a helping of right-the-fuck-now on the side.”

    “Elizabeth."
I feel my smile on my face as I understand what she is doing. Though it's a strange one, she has a name-sound just like I do, and she's telling me what it is. I try to make the same sounds.
"Ehh..beh." I frown. Why is her name-sound so difficult and so long?
She frowns right back at me and says it again. "Elizabeth."
    "Beh-tah-babaa."
She sighs and her forehead wrinkles.
    "Elizabeth. Eeee-lizzzz-ahh-beth."
    "Laahh...baaay."
    She taps her chest again.
    "Beth!"
The sound is shorter but still very odd.
    "Beh-bet."
    "Beth," she repeats.
I've had enough. I reach out and touch her should.
    "Beh."
    "Beth."
I tap her a little harder and growl.
"Beh", I repeat. I tap her again. "BEH!"
Her eyes widen a bit, and she inhales sharply. A moment later, her shoulders drop and she sighs.
    "Beh," she says quietly.”

“I held you," she said, her voice was tense and gaining in volume. "I held you, and you cried, and you asked me why no one had ever wanted you. You asked me why your own mother didn't want you. You asked me why it hurt so much and if I could make it stop hurting. I may not know a lot about you, but I know you aren't as much of a badass as you want people to think you are.”

“Cruelty is easy, and it breeds only misery. Kindness is harder, and you have to be brave to give it. To be cruel, you can stay closed off from everyone, wear a mask, but to be kind, in essence, to show love, you have to make yourself vulnerable, show your true self to someone and open yourself up to rejection.”
L.H. Cosway, The Nature of Cruelty

“I love him because he makes me laugh when I don't feel like laughing. I love him because he challenges my view of what a man is. I love him because I know I shouldn't love him and that he'll break my heart. I love him because he's a complete and total anomaly. I love him because I want to kill the sadness inside him more than I want anything else in the world.”
    L.H. Cosway, Painted Faces

“We both know that mystery is better than the truth. So why not live with the magic? Be a kid again and believe in the fantastical. Life is more fun with a little smoke and mirrors.”

“Cruelty is seldom forgotten. You feel it as a child. Somebody takes away your toy or thoughtlessly kicks over your sand castle. A beautiful boy walks into your life, sees something he doesn’t like or doesn’t understand, and painstakingly endeavours to make you feel how much he hates you, to be constantly aware of the flaws that provoke that hatred. And then you grow older and wiser, but you don’t forget the cruelty. You can’t forget it, because there is nothing stronger, nothing more palpable in the human brain than the memory of mistreatment.”
L.H. Cosway, The Nature of Cruelty

“Nicholas is gay, isn't he," she says, her voice dripping with dejection.

I shrug, again remembering his proposition from last night. "Not necessarily. The jury's still out. There's hope for a Christmas wedding yet," I tell her.”
