From the Author herself "My intention with Thuvhe and Shotet was to make very clear that they are people of blended origins, that they are physically indistinguishable from another. This means that Thuvhe is not populated with light-skinned, straight-haired people, and Shotet is not populated with dark-skinned, curly-haired people—both cultures contain a mixture of physical descriptors … So, to summarize: Shotet is not a culture of dark-skinned individuals. Thuvhe is not a culture of light-skinned individuals. They share a history (discussed on pages 124-129 of the book); they share bloodlines."

The article that wrote about the book being racist took it out of context. Watch the many videos and articles about carve the mark being racist and you will agree. The article also claimed that the main part of the story is "dark skinned" against "caucasian" which is not the case. It is about two different parts of land against each other (not the only part of the story but also a concluding part) but if you were to see all those people together you wouldn't be able to tell them apart, except for there clothes. They area ll the same

I just read it and yes racism is one of the themes, but in my eyes at least, I wouldn't call the book racist. I think Roth used racism as one of the main themes to show readers that racism is a universal concept and no matter who it is directed towards it is wrong. I live in a very diverse area and grew up with all kinds of racism, even racism against whites (and yes thats a thing). In the book it has racism on both sides even against the white protagonist, calling him weak and thin skinned. long story short I wouldn't not read the book just because of the bad blog posts and all the bad press it is getting, I overall loved the book and almost didn't read it because I heard it is a "racist book". I would read it yourself if you are intrigued, after all the coolest thing about people is we all think and see things differently!!!!
