SPOILER IN THIS QUESTION. Just finished the book and really enjoyed it. However, I am confused by one detail. In the book's opening, which takes place after the explosion, as Max reflects on his testimony, he is asked about Emilie and talks with the other person about what ship she's going to return to Germany on. But, at the end of the book, Emilie is one of the characters killed, so how does that make sense??

Wilhelm Balla wants to say good-bye to her. At the end of the novel, on July 24, 1937, Max visits Emilie's grave in the Hauptfriedhof cemetery, Frankfurt.(less)
