lauren lese I believe it was intentional mis-direction on the part of the author. Emilie was spoken of in a way that made it sound like she was alive, but on re-reading everything said could theoretically apply to someone not alive. I'm not sure what the author was attempting to accomplish with this mis-direction.
Iris I wondered about this too. But I know the answer. Max says Emilie is going home "on the Hamburg. With the others." Max is referring to the other people who have died and are going to be buried in Germany. Wilhelm Balla wants to say good-bye to her. At the end of the novel, on July 24, 1937, Max visits Emilie's grave in the Hauptfriedhof cemetery, Frankfurt.
