My grandfather was in France at the end of WWI. Did you have a family member to base your story on?
Jacqueline Winspear
I didn't base my story on my grandfather, but my interest in the period was inspired by observing him when I was a very young child. He enlisted in 1914, saw action at Ypres and was severely wounded in the Battle of the Somme in 1914. He was gassed, shell-shocked and sustained horrible leg wounds. My grandmother worked at a munitions factory, and was partially blinded when a shell exploded, also injuring her sister and killing several of the young women who worked alongside them.

I am a HUGE fan of your Maisie Dobbs series. I devour each book as it's released. I love the journey Maisie seems to be on and that she meditates and uses intuition to solve her cases. She is such a strong female role model. What inspired you to create Maisie? I hope you will continue writing books about her for many years to come.
