Sara asked:

Is there anything inappropriate for young readers in this book? My young DD is passionate about mathematics and is dying to read this book, and prefers to read the original versus the young readers version. She reads at a high school level. Thank you!

Erin Just a suggestion, but let your daughter read whatever she wants! Nothing is inappropriate.
Danielle Don't get the Young Readers version! Get your DD to read the regular version, there isn't anything inappropriate and it's a great way to expose people to concepts in physics, mathematics and engineering. Tell them to Google what they don't understand and it will make it an even more comprehensive experience!
Drew There's nothing inappropriate in the book, nor is there any material that would not be accessible to say a junior high school reader. There are a few bits of historical perspective that might take a bit of explaining the youngsters. When the book mentions sit-ins talking about the civil rights movement, it might help to have some concept of what the lunch counter at Woolworth's was.
Devora There is a Young Readers version. The adult version has a lot of technical jargon. I love science, too, and am highly educated in my field (not math or science) and some of the mathematical concepts were a stretch for me. She might enjoy the Young Readers version more, at least until she takes Calculus!
Sue Grise Let her read it! Don't give her the young readers version when she wants to read the real book. I do believe some things are inappropriate for kids readers (although not in this book), and parents should (very occasionally) act as gatekeepers, but don't ever "dumb" something down if they're up for the challenge. I f something's a bit above their level, they'll learn; if it's a bit below, they'll grow bored.
Ruth If she reads at a high school level, she will enjoy this. The chapters aren't too long and the writing is engaging. If she's passionate about math, she will prefer the version with more math!
James Wattengel I think a high school student can easily handle the technical parts of the book.

There is nothing inappropriate.
Pam As a children's librarian and college math major, I can say there is nothing in the book that is inappropriate for children. However, it is heavy on the math and science, but that's not all bad. Perhaps it will feed her interest in the STEM subjects. There is also a lot about Jim Crow laws, segregation and the civil rights movement. She can always skip the more technical stuff if she needs to.
Rhonda Erb She should be able to read it and I found nothing inappropriate. I am waiting until my son is in high school due to civil rights and I will read it with him. I want him to understand the social dynamics.
Daleen There was nothing inappropriate... I hope she loves it!
Jan Wonderful book. Nothing inappropriate at all. It's great that she is passionate about math. More power to her!!
Deanna I read the book and did not find anything that I feel would be inappropriate for my nine-year-old daughter. That said, I found the Young Reader's version for her at the library and we had our own book club, reading and discussing a few chapters at a time.
Linda There is a young reader's addition, which might be a better choice simply because the book is more of a historical dissertation, nothing in the book that is to be hidden from young readers. It should be a must read simply for the fight for integration and the battles against segregation and how color has no place in determination of brilliance.

Reads kind of like a text book.
Lisa D. The original is very appropriate for your daughter. I don't believe there's any harm in it.
Bernice Nothing inappropriate. I personally felt like it read more like a documentary. But for someone passionate about math and science, very appropriate.
Debbie Szalkowski Its history, nothing inappropriate or graphic
Allison This is a wonderful book! Let her read it. If she has questions, maybe she can talk to her teachers.

Encourage her to dream and explore.
Tammy Great book for all lovers of math.
Greg Erin, there is no math here. Not a single equation. Nothing. Very little science. But it is, overall, interesting and there is nothing inappropriate for young readers. And about 'young readers', I say let anyone read anything they want. If you say "no, you can't read that', you can bet they will.
Jane This is a great story regardless of how it's told!
Deborah I say read it with her. That way you can discuss anything that may trouble her.
Betsy Murphy there isn't anything inappropriate about this book , but its long winded with the jargon as mentioned before . It's a tough read for those with short attention spans . also since her reading level is high school which is great but its her maturity level you have to think about - So I recommend you read any young adults or adults books before you let her . happy reading .
Ramona Nothing inappropriate
