Sara Thanks! Yes, I generally do, but DD9 was totally engrossed in The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks and she pointed out some sexual references that she did not understand, so I'm more careful now!

Bookslut ????

Gillian I admire that you make sure that the content is appropriate and do not agree with Erin's advice. The first thought that came to mind when I read these comments was that yes there are inappropriate books for certain ages. This particular one is not ... Good parenting :)

Bookslut Totally agree.

Erin Even when we try to shield our kids from things we deem inappropriate by keeping them from reading or watching certain things they will still be introduced to it in other ways. It's just my opinion that asking questions is the way we learn something and there shouldn't be a restriction on teaching our kids. If she can read and understand this material she is old enough to ask questions about sex.

Aimee Erin, just because children can access these materials doesn't mean they ought to be able to, or that we (adults) shouldn't try to shield children from such content. I agree that children should be encouraged to ask questions and that adults shouldn't shy away from explaining things such as sex to them, but it ought to be done in an age-appropriate way (i,e, you might teach a young child about consent but you probably wouldn't give them details about different sexual positions). I think Sara just wanted to make sure this book was age-appropriate, not that she is trying to ban her daughter from exploring the world around her.

Betsy Murphy its the matter of their maturity level , if they are able to understand the reading material . I know too many kids who read at college level but don't have a clue at what they just read .

Exokiwi Totally agree with Erin. I read my mum's books from the adult library when I grew up from age 8 or so. She never stopped me, and it never hurt me. Did end up with some interesting mother-daughter discussions and deep trust between us though.
