A Goodreads user asked Jennifer A. Nielsen:

what if you don't have a good topic or character?

Jennifer A. Nielsen Well, then you need a different topic or character, right?

I know that sounds simplistic, but that's the beauty of being the author. You can change whatever isn't working. Sometimes that means throwing out everything. Sometimes it just requires you to tweak some details.

For example, if the topic is, "What I did on my summer vacation," it could become, "What I did on my summer vacation to Mars after inventing intergalactic travel."

Granted, if this is a topic assigned by your teacher, they might not be good with that, but I bet if it was good writing, they'd love it.

Remember that as the author, you are limited only by your imagination. So be bold, take risks, and write only the things you love.
