Kimber asked Jennifer Chambliss Bertman:

I recently got Book Scavenger for my birthday and will start reading it as soon as I am done with all of my library books. I heard you live in Colorado. Where exactly in Colorado do you live? I may live close, and when the second book comes out, I might be able to make it to one of your tours. Also, what writing tips can you give me?

Jennifer Chambliss Bertman Hi Kimber! I have done book events with Tattered Cover (usually Aspen Grove or Colfax locations), Book Bar (in Denver), Second Star to the Right (Denver), and Boulder Bookstore, so if any of those stores are near you there's a good chance I'll be doing something with them again in the future. I'm actually going to be at Second Star to the Right on November 5 at 2:00pm--you can keep an eye on my events page here or on my website for more info. Subscribing to my newsletter (link found on either my author website jenniferchamblissbertman.com or the Book Scavenger site bookscavenger.com) is also a good way to keep up on the latest news (and I often do giveaways through the newsletter too!)

As for writing tips--the short answer is read a lot and write a lot. You have to practice any skill to get better at it, and both reading stories and writing stories help you exercise the necessary muscles. When you read, think about what you like and don't like about a story. If a story is funny, what made it funny for you? If you couldn't put a book don't, think about why. If a character makes you feel a strong emotion (you love them, hate them, are scared of them, etc) think about why--what did the author do in the writing that made you feel that way? When you are writing your stories, try to have fun with it and just keep at it. I don't know how old you are, but two writing books that have been useful to me are WRITING MAGIC by Gail Carson Levine (which is geared toward younger writers but I've found it helpful as an adult too), and THE SCENE BOOK by Sandra Scofield.
