Goodreads asked Kimberly Gordon:

Where did you get the idea for your most recent book?

Kimberly Gordon I love superheroes and wanted to do a dark romantic comedy series about it. How exactly DO you go on a date when you have a nasty habit of bursting into flames? Or accidentally zapping your loved ones? Being a Super isn't all it's cracked up to be!

The Black Kat series is actually a spin off of my Calpernica series. I knew I wanted a heroine who was a writer in the second book. C.J. Weatherly, aka Charlie, is based on a short story I wrote in high school about a world famous author who had absolutely no talent whatsoever, drank like a fish, and tried to set her Pulitzer Prize on fire to no avail. My English teacher told me I should get it published, but I was too embarrassed to pursue that.

Fast forward nearly 30 years later. I was dreaming up what to do in the sequel to Crazy in the Heart and remembered that character. I decided to write her in as Jack's love interest. But I wanted to give her an interesting series. Why not superheroes? Why not write some of the characters from one series into the other?

And thus, Black Kat was born.
