A Goodreads user asked P.C. Cast:

marked was the first book I picked up in high school. it got me into reading the YA genre. in terms for aspiring authors, is it better to self publish first before approaching publishing houses? I have seen a lot of reviews of the final few books, did you ever get pressured to write the series a lot quicker than you would have liked.

P.C. Cast I don't think it's wise for inexperienced authors to self pub. Young authors need excellent editors to help hone their maturing skills. Self publication doesn't do that.

I don't read reviews, so I'm not sure what you're asking. If you mean did I get pressure to end the series sooner - no. Because of my word count (decided by my publisher) the plot needed 12 books to come to the conclusion. Did I get pressure to write faster - yes. Today many authors are pressured to write faster and faster to please the short attention span of today's internet readers. I believe quality takes time, though, and that kind of pressure creates crappy writing. I ignore that pressure.
