First, I turn the TV off and get off Facebook. Sometimes, I just sit in complete silence so I can hear myself think. I also think a lot about my upbringing in the South. Many of the language that I remember and specific smells of the food that I remember serve as the catalyst to get me going. A few of my characters are from the South and speak in a southern dialect. This helps me get in the flow of writing, as I am able to draw upon my North Carolina roots as a safe haven or place of familiarity while I write.
