I stop. I don't fight against myself. I take it as a sign that there is no more writing for the day. I don't fight it because it will lead to output that's forced. During that time away, I just begin observing my surroundings again and eavesdropping on unsuspecting conversations to see if something can spark my interest (a phrase, a word, a smell, etc). From there, I start again with renewed vigor and direction.

I'm working on my first novel. I've finished about 5 chapters so far. Its basic premise deals with how faith stands (or doesn't stand) in the midst of a world that is constantly changing. It's gonna be juicy!

First, I turn the TV off and get off Facebook. Sometimes, I just sit in complete silence so I can hear myself think. I also think a lot about my upbringing in the South. Many of the language that I remember and specific smells of the food that I remember serve as the catalyst to get me going. A few of my characters are from the South and speak in a southern dialect. This helps me get in the flow of writing, as I am able to draw upon my North Carolina roots as a safe haven or place of familiarity while I write.

The idea came from my own challenges I experienced in my life from a lad to where I am now. Everyone has his/her own set of challenges that had to be overcome. I share a few of my "lemons" and how I managed to turn them into "lemonade." The basic skeleton of the book came about as I was going to counseling to deal with some trauma I experienced as a child. I wrote to process my thoughts. Lo and behold, "Lemonade" was born. Who knew?
