While you don't HAVE to, you will better understand Corrie's backstory and her relationship with Pendergast. It's not a continuation of a previous book.
Jane
This is the only book in the series that I've read. It was a good read as a stand alone novel. I don't feel that I've missed anything in order to have enjoyed this book.

No, you don't really have to! It is more a matter of, you will want to, after you read this! So go ahead and read it, any way you get started on Agent Pendergast you will be happy for it!
Mark Smith
I prefer to. That way, you know the backstory better.
Warren Benton
I agree with Lisa's answer. You can read all the Pendergast books as stand-alone novels, but they do a great job of overtime developing a full character.
They authors do not do as some series writers do where each time they talk about a snippet of an earlier novel, then recount the whole situation to you.
