Emma Cline writes like a dream. The language and insights into human nature kept me turning the pages as much as the story. The dead-on observations of a young girl's interiority reminds me a bit of Jennifer Egan's earlier work -- The Invisible Circus, some of her short fiction in The Emerald City, as well as the flashback scenes of the main character and her high school bestie in Look at Me . (Egan blurbs beautifully about The Girls.) I didn't think it was gory; the book focuses more on psychological violence.(less)
