Anne (Booklady) Molinarolo asked Chelsea Cain:

Ms. Cain, how did you dream up a wonderful character like Gretchen? Not many female Mass Murderers out there. She reminds me of Hannibal Lecter before Harris explained him in HANNIBAL.

Chelsea Cain I ignored all my research and allowed my imagination to take over. Gretchen is larger than life. She has no self-doubt. She knows what she wants. She's my favorite character to write because she always has a good one-liner ready and she doesn't suffer fools. But I think a lot of her power comes from the fact that she keeps us guessing - we never know quite what she's thinking. Once a character like that is explained (a la Hannibal) it changes everything; they become people. That would be the worst thing I could ever do to Gretchen, to humanize her.
