I read this as a child and tender-hearted animal lover and survived. Changed, but for the better.
It's certainly not intended for children, any more than Watership Down was, but it will make children think, which I would argue is what you want. In my view, it's perfectly appropriate for mature early teens or older.

Nope, Nope, Nope, do not give this book to a child to read. Especially if they are an animal lover. I read this way to young and hated it so much. I would probably be boarding on okay now but then, no way........

It is decidedly NOT child friendly.
And it's not really very friendly for tender-hearted animal lovers either.
It's a grim picture of the life of animals when their fate is left to cruel research and then escape with no safe haven to go to.

I wached the movie and am trying to find a coppy of the book. One thing I can say is that, even though the movie is one of my favorite, it is so very dark and heart renching that I don't think it is very approprite for young children. But, before you toss it aside, read it yourself and see what you think of it. Again, I only wached the movie, and I highly recommend waching it.

Absolutely not. Definitely aimed at an adult audience. Extremely graphic in some places.

I'm on page 48 and the reading level is definitely adult. But this is because of the author's style and the old-English verbiage.
