I love that the characters all have an associated scent. What inspired that concept? When you create a character, do you already have thier scent in mind or is that something that comes after?

Deborah Harkness great question! I wanted to use as many of the five senses as I could in the book, in part because vampires have such preternatural senses so I wanted to be sure to include what they could perceive. As for picking them, I often rely on what was common in the geographic area/time period when they were made a vampire (in the case of vampires), or for witches they are linked to their powers in some way.
