It reads to me like a graphic novel, an immersive world is instantly painted in my head, and I cruise through it. Read it at least half a dozen times over the years. There's definitely a slow patch in the middle for a bit, all that explaining, the smooth flow is broken and that's mildly annoying, but doesn't stop me from coming back again! I include this with William Gibson's novels, especially the early Neuromancer and Count Zero, dystopian near-future sci-fi that you can slip into, like putting on a VR headset. (For the effect, a close video-equivalent for me is "Altered Carbon" on Netflix.)

The first chapters hooked me, pooning me forward with enough momentum to get me through the soul-sucking exegesis of Sumerian lore.

I'm in the middle part now and I have to agree. I'm still going to finish it, but yeah, the middle part. ugh.

I'm in the same boat right now. Did you ever finish it? I'm on the fence right now. I'd like to know if I'm going to care about the characters more than I do at this point in the story.

I had the opposite reaction, the beginning was hard to get through while the middle became interesting. The end was altogether a different experience and made me dislike it a bit.

The first time I read "Snow Crash" I had extreme trouble getting through it, only finished it because I was reading it for a class, and didn't think strongly of it when finished. I came back to the book a year later after failing to find a book with as much action in it, and gave it a re-read; that's when it became my favorite book.
"Snow Crash" is extremely difficult the first time around. Once you read it a second time and understand it, that's when it becomes truly awesome.
