A Goodreads user asked:

I'm trying to read all the star wars books in chronological order, mainly using the timeline at the front of Dawn of the Jedi but this isn't on it and I really want to read. When should I be reading this?

Chris Larue There are sooo many books to read in the Star Wars universe. It depends on you really. Tarkin is considered Canon (the current storyline). Honestly if you want to go in chronological order using the canon books I would start with Episode I: The Phantom Menace by Terry Brooks. I also HIGHLY recommend watching The Clone Wars (Cartoon TV Series) the story lines there also tie into the canon story line. If you are just looking for a really good read and awesome backstory you MUST read the Han Solo Trilogy.
Braden right before you watch rogue one
Michael Tarkin is the commander from episode 4 a new hope and thus should be read anywhere between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope, since he dies in that movie.
Welliton de Lara I agree with Chris Larue ' s idea. To understand SW you must consume other medias as cartoon series, books, movies and novels. I recommend to use the Wookiepedia (a lot) and some youtube channels like Star Wars Explained. Helps a lot and give some directions.

I am studying SW from a while to improve the RPG sessions (using the SW Saga). Totally worth it.

I almost forgot. Don´t be frustrated if at certain point you miss a point or other. SW is a work in progress and every year we have new books, episodes and movies. It changes a look. Take Phasma as example. From a small role in the episode VII to a entire (and awesome) book going to a probably good part in the episode VIII (I Hope). It is a lot.

Enjoy your journey and May the force be with you.
Chad If I were you I would go to wookiepedia and search the official canon books. They have a timeline of events. The expanded universe is so vast and would take a lifetime to follow. Plus, many of the non canon books contradict the story lines. Wookiepedia and starwars.com are your best resources for official, recognized books, comics, movies, and tv shows.
Nicolas Davila I am doing that now. I am hopping around all of the pre episode IV books now and then I will work my way to the later stuff. There are about 12 adult books out now so I am going to plow through those so I can be up to date as new books come out. There should be a wikipedia page to help you figure out what you need to read.
Sam This book contains a list of movies, TV series, and books in the "Canonical Order" at the time of publication. Going strictly by movies, it fits between Episode III - Revenge of the Sith and the new Rogue One film.

As far as book timeline, it fits between Lords of the Sith and A New Dawn.
Robert Fitzsimmons It would appear that the timeline you are looking at is a timeline of legends novels, which is the non-canonical banner under which Dawn of the Jedi exists. This novel is part of a new canon which began in 2014. For more information on the new canon, you might want to check the timeline at the beginning of the newest novel "Aftermath: Life Debt". You can also read the timeline of canon media on wookiepedia, or the Del Rey Star Wars timeline (http://www.randomhousebooks.com/campa...).
In terms of reading order, you have multiple options, you can pick and choose which canon novels you wish to read (or vice versa), and read them in a pattern of Canon, Legends, Canon, Legends, and so on. Or you could disregard one timeline and choose to only read one, thus lightening your reading load.
In the canon timeline, this novel takes place between Lords of the Sith and A New Dawn.
Sorry for the long answer, but I hope this helped.
Sarah As best as I understand it (and I'm still new at this) Tarkin comes after Lords of the Sith, which is directly after Episode III. So, it's between Episode III (the end of the Republic Era) and Kenobi (the start of the Imperial Era).
