He spent six months sober because she wasn't by his side. And not to mention that Maven killed children. Mare never really loved him and it was more of a mutual bond between her and Maven. Nor did she experience heartbreak from him. He only betrayed her.
Cal on the other hand choose the crown over her in King's cage. But either ways they both end up together. Plus what Maven did to Mare scarred her emotionally and phiscally.

Cal also gave Mare a choice in King's Cage. Yet she said no to being his queen and anyone else's. She still had a little more love for Cal than Maven.
