Michele Hane My son started reading this just after he turned 8 and he finished all of them (and the Brotherband Chronicles and the Early Years prequel) in about 2 months. He finished all of the Harry Potter books last year at 7, so if they can handle Potter, they can handle this. He's now reading The Summoner Trilogy. We ask him about it and he tells us the plot and how each books relates to another. In search of his next series.
James I was an advanced reader when I was 10, so I understood it. My sister recommended it. Btw, they're really good. My sister cried when she realized there wouldn't be a Book 13.
Makenna 12 and up, I don't think anyone younger would enjoy it
Mgreenspan I tried reading this book at the age of 10, and I did not understand it. I came back to it at the age of 12 and read all 12 books and the 6 from the side series. If your son is confused, I suggest you do not read it to him.
Carmen Robaldo My husband is currently reading this to our 8 year old son and our 12 year old daughter owns the entire series
Addison Dixon I would recommend this book for ages 12/13 and up.
Rowan C my brother read it at 13, however it would probably be suitable for 11+
Zywia I read this when I was seven (or six), and I really enjoyed it, though I always read books for older kids. My brother is reading this at 10 and doesn't really like it, it's to boring for it.
It doesn't have anything inappropriate, only some people die, and get killed, but never going into any gory detail or whatever, and it's always the "bad guys" or people that you didn't really know in the story.
The only thing that I say would be, is that it could be simply boring. The start for this book is kind of slow for readers who prefer more action-packed books, just like Harry Potter I guess.
It is also enjoyable for older readers though, as I am in the middle of reading this book again, and it's actually a fun read, just like a fluffy cuddly pie.
So I'd say depending on the reader, as it might be boring, but nothing inappropriate.
Cat I just read this to my 8 year old brother and he loved it. That being said, some of the words used in the book can be confusing for younger readers. I found myself having to explain words every so often while reading because I knew that he wouldn't understand. To me, that's the only problem for younger readers if they are trying to read it on their own, just making sure that they can actually understand what is being said. Also, in terms of this taking place in an older time, words like fief can be outside the realm of understanding for younger people.
Lydia Wiesenauer Probably if you are planning to let someone younger than a fifth grader read it, you should preview each book in the series first, as some are rather scary, for young kids
Heidi Stallman 10 and up. This is what I call YA-light. It doesn't contain inappropriate subjects or topics for the younger readers, so you can give it to a 10-year-old, but it will hold the attention of teen readers, too, especially those that like adventures. I think it's perfect for 6th - 9th graders.
Esther I read them all of the ranger's apprentice books (including the early years) and Brotherband age 11-12 which was really good timing
Jen My son is 9 and loved it.
Terri Walsh I would say 10 and up. My 10 year old son has read the whole series. He went through it really fast and enjoyed it. He is waiting on me to finish but I am only on book 5.
Aleksandras Kulik My kid is 10 yo and he just blazed through this one, was absolutely fascinated by it and already asks for #2 (The Burning Bridge).
So, it seems that the approximate age range is 9-12 years..
Jennifer My 8 year has read it and enjoyed it. I'm thinking it is more geared for young adult but the way it is written younger readers are able to follow it.
