Laura asked Nalini Singh:

Hi Nalini, I was wondering about your writing process. Do you have a set time laid out for each book, or do you write one until it is done? When you go on vacation do you take unfinished books with you to work on. Love your stories.

Nalini Singh I do have deadlines because that means I can keep a regular release schedule. So that means I write certain things at certain points of the year. For example, at the start of the year, I'm usually all about the next Guild Hunter book.

However, because I write series, I am constantly making notes for future books, so timewise, parts of a book may be written over multiple years. HEART OF OBSIDIAN is the perfect example - I wrote the first scene for it soon after the two protaganists appeared in the series, and that was a number of books before their own.

I used to only write one book at a time, but year or two ago, I switched to doing two at a time and it's really working for me. I work on two totally different projects: eg. a paranormal and a contemporary. And they have to also be a two totally different points. eg. first draft and third draft edit. The switching freshens up my mind and it's actually made me faster as a writer.

Vacation: I am notorious for working on vacation because for me, writing is still my hobby as well as my career. It makes me happy to write. I also work on planes a lot - no distractions!
