What are your 5 favorite books —and why?

P.D. Workman That’s a really tough one! There are a lot of books that I really love. These are just a few:

Call of the Wild by Jack London - The Call of the Wild enthralled me as a child, took me into another world, full of danger and violence.

Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien - I loved the Hobbit, and the Lord of the Rings was so much deeper and fuller. I have read everything I could by Tolkien, including those published after his death. Unlike many authors who write a language for the world they have built, Tolkien built a world for the languages he had created.

The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton - The Call of the Wild took me into the Yukon, The Lord of the Rings took me into Middle Earth, and The Outsiders took me into a different social strata for the first time. I was shocked and enthralled.

Breaking Rank by Kristen D. Randle - While I didn’t read this one as a youth, Breaking Rank has many similarities to The Outsiders. Like The Outsiders, it grabbed me by the heart and squeezed.

The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexander Dumas - Who could not love The Count of Monte Cristo? The complex plot and subplots, the action, and the justice and mercy of the Count.
