Farwa Khan asked P.D. Workman:

In By-Pass, does Bobby have a stutter or a stammer? For example of stammer see Colin Firth in The King's Speech. Whereas in a stutter, the person can utter the first letter of a word but cannot seem to get the rest out and in a stammer, the entire word seems to be lodged in the throat.

P.D. Workman Both words have the same meaning:

And both types of stammer/stutter are often seen together. Bobby mostly displays the "first sound" stammer, but you will also see him repeat words or phrases trying to get them out, or change what he is saying midstream when he can't manage a word.
