Rich asked:

Would this be suitable for my 10 year old to read? His reading level is very advanced so i am not worried about the reading difficulty. I am concerned about adult themes,;minor swearing and violence is ok but graphic sex or violence etc not good. Any thoughts?

Nick Borrelli No way this is a book that a 10 year-old should be reading. The themes are very adult-oriented and there is an abundance of graphic violence. Also some sex scenes. Robin Hobb writes about heavy issues and somewhat depressing topics. These are books that even adults have a hard time dealing with. She is an excellent writer, but these are not "feel-good" books by any means.
Adam Lane The book's not too heavy on the swearing off the top of my head, but there's at least two instances of fairly graphic sex in the book, one of which is in a brothel, which might take some explaining!

It's your call of course, but I'd personally give it a year or two.
Tatiana No, not Okay for a 10 year old. The first book is not quite as grisly as the later ones but as the entire series carries themes of the subjugation of others; rape, torture, murder and degrading treatment of slaves and women are fairly regular in the next two books in the series. The themes are also going to be way too complex for a ten/eleven year old to fathom or garner more than a superficial understanding of. I would recommend waiting for 15+ minimum. They might like the Throne of Glass series by Sarah J Maas if you think they can handle a little killing, swearing and sex. For their age (and older) if they love the Fantasy Genre I'd have them read the following books first (they do have some romantic relationships, and death/torture but it is not graphic:
Cornelia Funke's Ink Heart series,
Phillip Pullman's His Dark Materials series
Lois Lowry's The Giver series
While these are ostensibly late teen YA fantasy novels, they are well written and complicated series with more layers than Harry Potter has spin offs
Jessica My son is 12, and I still wouldn't allow him to read this series.
Tobias I would disagree with the below; there are some grissly scenes, but there's very little swearing and whilst there are depictions of adult themes (some sex primarily) none of it is excessive. If your 10-yr-old is mature, and it's stuff that you've discussed with them in advance, then I would say yes; if they're still finding their way then maybe wait a couple of years.
Katherine Laurain Ashburner No not ok for 10 year olds. It gets more adult themed (sex and violence) as the series progresses.
