Rich asked this question about Ship of Magic (Liveship Traders, #1):
Would this be suitable for my 10 year old to read? His reading level is very advanced so i am not worried about the reading difficulty. I am concerned about adult themes,;minor swearing and violence is ok but graphic sex or violence etc not good. Any thoughts?

The first book is not quite as grisly as the later ones but as the entire series carries themes of the subjugation of others; rape, torture, murder and degrading treatment of slaves and women are fairly regular in the next two books in the series. The themes are also going to be way too complex for a ten/eleven year old to fathom or garner more than a superficial understanding of. I would recommend waiting for 15+ minimum. They might like the Throne of Glass series by Sarah J Maas if you think they can handle a little killing, swearing and sex. For their age (and older) if they love the Fantasy Genre I'd have them read the following books first (they do have some romantic relationships, and death/torture but it is not graphic:
Cornelia Funke's Ink Heart series,
Phillip Pullman's His Dark Materials series
Lois Lowry's The Giver series
While these are ostensibly late teen YA fantasy novels, they are well written and complicated series with more layers than Harry Potter has spin offs(less)
