Curious question: what inspired you to write the Sevenwaters series?

Juliet Marillier Hi Nathalie. I've always loved the fairy tale The Six Swans (it's in the Grimm Brothers' collection) and when I had time and energy to do some serious writing I decided to base a novel on that story, but to put real, fully-fleshed-out characters in it. I wanted to explore how those devastating events would affect real people: who would become stronger, who would come unstuck, how it would change their relationships with one another. I like the fact that there is a strong female character at the heart of the story, and a strong theme of love between siblings. I've had a lifelong interest in Celtic history and mythology, and that's where the Irish setting came from.
