Kate Forsyth:
Dear Ms Forsyth, i enjoyed listening to both bitter greens and wild girl and I'm looking forward to reading more of your work! about the latter book I was wondering how much of Dorchen's life as narrated in the novel did actually happen and how much was fiction? I'm mainly thinking about dorchen's relationship with her father and the terrible things she had to go through beacuse of him! Thank you
Kate Forsyth
Dear Paola
I'm so glad that you've enjoyed my books & I hope you go on and read many more!
Virtually nothing was known about Dortchen's life at all - even her birthdate was difficult for me to discover - and so the book is built out of snippets of what was known. In my Afterword, I explain how I went about piecing together her life from the stories she told - basically I looked to the stories to give me some indication of her inner life. So its all guesswork, but informed as much as possible by what was known. There is a lot more about her on my blog, if you'd like to go and explore.
all my best
Kate

To me, Bitter Greens, The Beast's Garden, and The Wild Girl seem like they fit nicely into one subgenre of historical fiction while your children series seem like a totally different entity. Do you feel that way or do you think of those three and your children's books as one canon, if you will?

Kate Forsyth:
Hi Kate, I just wanted to say that my husband heard you on the conversation hour a couple of weeks ago on the ABC. That afternoon he collared my ear and told me about your fascinating story and also asked "Is she the author who you rave about with the Witches books?" haha.. Anyway, I just wanted to say, I can't wait to read Bitter Greens over the Christmas break. Have a wonderful Christmas and New Year.
