Eric Bowers asked this question about Killing Floor (Jack Reacher, #1):
Does the series get better? Because I am about half way through the first book and I'm not sure if it is worth the effort to finish it.

Each successive title increases in quality by several orders of magnitude, so by the fourth volume Lee Childs is simultaneously embarrassing William Faulkner, Charles Dickens, Dashiell Hammett, Thomas Pynchon, Stephen King & James Joyce, bettering them all in their respective narrative bests. By book 8, the writing transcends the limitations of the human mind, so I recommend stopping at 7.
Actual Answer: The series has its ups & downs, qualitatively, but has remained remarkably consistent through to book 12, which I'm in the midst of enjoying for exactly what it is: a simply constructed thriller with a lead character who was custom-made for streamlined investigating & meddling all across America, and a very low tolerance for tough guys making threats. His bodycount as a civilian, without the protection of his commission as a Major in the Army's Military Police, has gotten to a point that puts him far, FAR above the deadliest known serial killers, but... whatever. The Dick Hill-narrated audiobooks are excellent for long jogs, walks or hikes.(less)
