The book, "The House on Mango Street" by sandras Cisneros should be read by everyone because it describes how different people live and what they have to deal with.
In the book Esperanza is a little girl that explains her life and the life of others in the neighborhood. She explains that her house is not what she expected and how he wants to move out of there as soon as she gets the chance to do so. She also describes the lives of different neighbors. For example, Rosa Vargas is a single mother of a lot of kids who struggle to keep all of them in line and under control because her husband left without leaving anything behind. I wish they would have explained some of the characters lives better because some were really brief.
I encourage people to read this book because it talks about child abuse, and teen pregnancy in a way where it isn't that graphic for young readers.

I taught it to high school sophomores and juniors. It is not a children's book, but other than "My First Job" "Monkey Garden" and "Red Clowns" there is nothing explicitly sexual or harmful, no language or violence—and those stories are so very euphemistic that a six year old could listen without harm or much confusion. That said, there are some stories that are really wonderful for a very young child: "Hairs" is one. "Darius & the Clouds" and "And Some More" are lovely and funny, innocent and wise.
My students would each choose a story (not all were their choice) and we would read the entire book aloud in a week. It is a genuinely remarkable book for its revelations about childhood and children.

I'd suggest reading it yourself first. It can seriously be read in a couple of hours - it's very short. There are stories in here that deal with teenage pregnancy, spousal abuse, and child abuse, so keep that in mind. However, they are not graphically discussed and, quite frankly, kids need to learn at some point that these things happen, so perhaps this would be a good entry point to discussing these often uncomfortable topics with a 12 year old.

It's definitely appropriate - this book is actually taught in many elementary schools across the country!

Absolutely! Although it discusses some sensitive subjects, this is done in a way that isn't that graphic for young readers.

I read it when I was in 5th grade and it was ok, a bit boring for younger kids but content-wise appropriate. When I re-read in 10th grade I enjoyed it much more.

My 13 year old was very effected by this book..there is talk of suicide and rape..those words are not used directly, alluded to..she is deep and in tune to others..so if reading to or with students, prepare them for mature content. Although not spoken clearly..the deeper readers will pick up on it.

Yes! It's a young adult novel.

NO, as a teenager in middle school I would not recommend this book to anyone near my age group. It is extremely boring in my opinion and lacks action and suspense teenagers want in their books.

This book was written at a 7th grade reading level-12 is about seventh grade, I think, so it is about the level. For appropriateness, I would say yes. It is relevant to twelve because it is coming of age, and anything potentially sketchy most 12 year olds have been exposed to.
Savannah Tankersley
I'll be teaching it to my 7th grade honors literature class this year, so I believe so.
