This answer contains spoilers… (view spoiler)[I wondered that too (or rather, kept waiting for him to say it), and here is my take on things:

1. First of all, you know the old saying, "actions speak louder...", well, someone can say "I love you" over and over every day, but if they don't show it (or worse, show the opposite of it), then those 3 words are meaningless. (Trust me -- I've been a relationship where this has happened.) I agree with you though -- those 3 words are nice to hear, but I'll take actions over them any day.

2. From how Will was described (in his former life), and just the type of person he was (remember, he said is 8-9 mo. relationship with Alicia was "long" for him), I wonder if he "loved" Lou (i.e. if he really let go and gave his heart to her). You can tell, obviously, he really cared about her, and was more than just "fond" of her (as his mother said), but it makes me wonder if he was holding back his feelings because he wanted to be in control of his fate, and didn't want anything to deter him from that (kind of going along with what Ami F wrote). Or, if he couldn't love her because, as he said, he couldn't be the man he wanted to be with her (again, not allowing himself to fully love her/holding back). Maybe keeping a bit of a wall up with her, so he himself wouldn't experience any more emotional pain, in addition to the rest of his suffering.

3. Finally, maybe he did love her, but not in the way she loved him (even though he wanted to be physical with her), and thus, didn't say so because he didn't feel it like she did. I mean, it never says if he loved Alicia, even though he was in a relationship with her, and he missed her in the beginning. He is one of those guys who doesn't fall in love easy.

Another note: in a way, he kind of did say it in the letter, when he signed it "Love, Will". That was the closest she got to him actually saying it. That, and him telling her she made him happy, and she was sometimes the only reason for him to get up in the morning.

Like I said, this is my take on things. When someone shows you they love/care about you, hearing those 3 words just confirm it.

Actually, I just thought of another thing -- maybe he didn't say it to her because he didn't want to get her hopes up, knowing that he was going to go through with things; that "nothing was ever going to change his mind", so in not saying it, he was kind of sparing her more hurt. -- ?? Sujitra Raj Probably saying it makes him feel like he is making her a promise & expectation of a relationship & future. He knows he will not change his mind and he doesn't want to hurt her more that he already did. As you said, those powerful words are powerful because they hold a lot of emotions & Will knows its not fair to Lou to just say " i love you" to her & expect her to let him go after that.

Ami G I agree. I believe he was so stubborn to not show romantic emotions because he was set in following through wih his planned death. He always liked to be in control. His words were the only control he had of his whole body. Not saying those three words was just as powerful. I think that the end of the book he was going to stay alive for Lou, but he didnt say it, rather he showed her by taking care of her future which was more important to him.
