Férial asked Brian McClellan:

I first wanted to thank you for this wonderful story. I have still not recovered from the read, one of my favorite ever. As to the question, I just wondered why you didn't give your characters a family name (except for noble people like the lady Winceslas or Erika ja Leora). Did you do it on purpose ? As another difference between the nobility and the common people ?

Brian McClellan At first it was an oversight, but then I made it part of the world: commoners usually only have a single name, though some will take on a surname (Like Ricard Tumblar) to give themselves more of an official feel. Others will earn a moniker that becomes a second name for them, like Taniel Two-shot.

The nobility will almost always have two names, even if they are only referred to by their given or surname for most of the time.
