Phil asked:

Should I read this one before or after 'Mr. Penumbra's 24-Hour Bookstore' novel? I know the story takes place before the full novel but I also know prequels can spoil fun just as sequels do.

Christine Read "Mr. Penumbra's 24-hour bookstore' first. It is better reading it without knowing the backstory first - better to discover the bookstore as the main character discovers the bookstore.
C. (Comment, never msg). What odd replies so far: "Ajax Penumber 1969" is tailor made to precede the 2014 story! Had Robin written it before 2014, we would have read it as the series starter. I agree that the secrecy of the bookstore should be a savoured surprise but the 1969 mystery adventure does not divulge anything we discover in the second quest. In 1969, it is a party store that sells popular books. We don't know why high-shelved volumes are borrowed, nor what membership is about.
Elizabeth Sulzby I am undecided about whether to read this one. I agree to read Mr. P's 24 hour bookstore first. I am interested in the technology aspect of 24 hour. It has backstories of earlier technologies/print/fonts but I don't know about starting in 1969 unless it has "flash-forwards."
