Should I read this one before or after 'Mr. Penumbra's 24-Hour Bookstore' novel? I know the story takes place before the full novel but I also know prequels can spoil fun just as sequels do.

I agree that the secrecy of the bookstore should be a savoured surprise but the 1969 mystery adventure does not divulge anything we discover in the second quest. In 1969, it is a party store that sells popular books. We don't know why high-shelved volumes are borrowed, nor what membership is about.(less)
