It was so sad! Did you meet any of the Orphans? Were they sad and angry or thankful they weren't left as orphans on the streets of a city? Is there anything happening in the world today that is comparable for orphans?

Hi Lisa - I was lucky to interview seven living orphan-train riders. Most of them expressed gratitude for having been given a chance at a new life; some said that they feel they have a "survivor spirit" as a result of their experiences. There are lots of dispossessed and abandoned children all over the world today. In many ways, the emotions that kids in foster care feel are the same as kids on the orphan trains. It's a terrible thing to feel you've been abandoned.

Throughout the novel, Orphan Train, the theme and idea of "fate" stood out to me as something that played a large role in the decisions that Vivian made. I was wondering what your thoughts are on how Vivian perceived fate and what roles that played throughout the novel? Also, do you feel that the idea of fate led Vivian to both moments of happiness and depression?

I just finished A PIECE OF THE WORLD. Now I am reading everything I can find about the subjects of this very good story. Thank you for brings to life the complexities of relationships, being handicapped, and unmet desire. This book has given me a lot to ruminate about and has opened my eyes to a world I have known little to nothing about. Did Walton Hall ever know of the painting? Thank you.
