When writing historical fiction, how do you know how much history and how much fiction to put into your book? Or at what point does it stop being a historical fiction?

Isabel Allende Knowing how to balance history and fiction is a matter of instinct and, I suppose, of experience. I have written several novels based on historical facts and characters, and in most of my books there is a strong sense of place and time. I research thoroughly the historical facts and weave them lightly in the story. Anything heavy handed reads didactic and that is not the purpose of a novel. Usually most of the characters in the book are fictional but the environment in which they live and their circumstances belong to a time and a place that are easily recognizable. A good way of balancing a historical novel is to present the facts without judgement. The characters may have an opinion but not the narrator.
