Sam Julian
Sam Julian asked Anita Diamant:

What is your research process like, and how do you check your work for historical accuracy? Can you describe an instance when you decided, for dramatic or plot purposes, it was better to overlook historical precedent?

Anita Diamant Hi Sam. Sorry to be slow in answering. I check my work in a few ways. I do use the internet (never just Wikipedia though), looking for primary sources or expert/academic sources. I also give a near-final draft to a historian familiar with the period; I always get interesting, often subtle corrections. I don't know what you mean by "historical precedent." I try to avoid anything that would make a knowledgable reader say, "That's wrong!"
I try for historically possible, if not historical fact.
