What is the best thing about being a writer?

Anita Diamant My favorite thing about being a writer is the freedom to explore. As a journalist, I met cloistered nuns and the Surgeon General of the United States. As a novelist, I have explored different periods of history and imagined my way into lives lived long ago. I have a great job.

Have just finished reading The Boston Girl which took me back MANY years to when I started work as a typist/clerk for a firm of Attorneys. Not being Jewish, I was introduced to a very different culture and to this very day remember my time at the firm with the fondest memories - especially Mrs Bella Kaliski who insisted on speaking to me in her best Yiddish. Loved the gentleness of the story .....?

Hi Anita! I am a more recent fan, just finished reading The Boston Girl and loved it. Now I am going back to read your others. I adore historical fiction. My question: I see many correlations or maybe coincidences in The Boston Girl's Addie Baum and your life. (ex:Addie becomes a columnist, writes on child labor). Do you often incorporate your life and hopes into your characters?
