You've created strong female characters (Kitty, Asmira and Lucy) that differ from current SciFi/Fantasy in their focus on their mission and less worried about romantic entanglements with your male characters. Among the factors driving your creative concept do you have a daughter and are you consciously seeking to distinguish the role of the women in your stories in a way that is distinct from other literary trends?

Jonathan Stroud I don't know if it's a conscious thing: it's more an intuitive response to the women I know in my own life. I'm surrounded by strong females in several generations, who aren't solely defined by their romantic natures (though they certainly have them). So my heroines tend to keep that side of them bottled up, though it's definitely present...
