Jonathan Stroud Thanks. Hmm, other detective writers I've loved over the years include Raymond Chandler, who's fundamentally romantic, and Dashiell Hammett, who fundamentally isn't. All good writers influence me (I hope). Lately I've greatly admired Hammett's unsentimental prose.
